1984 Part 2 one

Quote: "At the sight of the words I love you the desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid."(Pg. 109)

Significance:

This quote sticks out like a sore thumb, as it is so unlike the appearence of Winston's usual thoughts. It seems Winston has changed quite a bit after meeting this woman. At the start of the novel, he had a large hatred of women and the desire to do horrible things to them, in particularly the dark haired girl. Now, he's found love in the dark haired girl, and has a new outlook on life. He no longer sees her as an object, but rather a goddess. It's amusing that one of the things he hated so much ended up becoming his reason for living. Perhaps it is founded on the fact that having felt so little compassion from others, Winston was overwhelmed by that of the dark haired girl's/ Although, he is clearly careful with this love, and not completely blinded by it....at least yet.

niggling: petty, especially in a nagging or annoying way. Trifling
