1984 Chapter five and six

Quote: "His mocking eyes roved over Winston's face. 'I know you,' the eyes seemed to say, 'I see through you. I know very well why you didn't go to see those prisoners hanged.'"

Significance: This is the second time Winston has translated a look from another into an understanding of what is going on in his mind. This shows that Winston is in danger of being arrested for Thoughtcrime, as he is unable to keep is own mind in chack in order to hide his feelings.
