Significance:
This quote shows that Winston still maintains the mentality of no winning, but simply doing better everytime. I doubt that he will keep this mentality much longer, as it seems his time with Julia has made him open to new ideas. However, that fact that he currently displays his past emotions(or lack there of) shows his character to be one who thinks he wants change, but may actually fear it as well.
